Well well well, if it isn’t Wednesday once again.

The other day, I was reminiscing on something slightly terrifying that happened to me last summer.

I was staying alone at my parents' house up in the mountains while they were out of town.

(I realize this sounds like the beginning of a horror movie)

It was a clear, quiet night – the perfect opp for a little solo stargazing.

Right before bed, I stepped out onto the deck to get one last look at the endless expanse of stars.

Breathed it all in. Felt at peace.

I turned to go back inside –

And the door was locked.

My serenity quickly vanished into the night.

If you were to get a glimpse of my internal dialog, it might have sounded something like:

What do you mean it’s locked?

It can’t be. It simply CANNOT be locked.

No no no, this is not happening!

This is a joke. Ha ha ha someone is playing a prank on me.

HOLY SH*T I’M DOOMED.

Unfortunately, it was not a prank.

The door was very much locked.

I was very much outside.

And the deck I was on? Has no other exit. Just a 50-foot drop down the side of a mountain.

Now, here is a rare example of when being glued to my phone is actually a good thing.

Because by the grace of God, I had brought it outside with me.

And other than the door mysteriously locking without cause, the events that followed could not have worked out better:

• I called my mom (she answered!)

• She contacted Public Safety

• She told them where her hidden key was

• Within 15 minutes, they arrived and let me back inside

Crisis averted.

And while I felt extremely lucky that it had all worked out,

I couldn’t shake this feeling of “what if?”

What if I didn’t have my phone?

What if my mom hadn’t answered?

What if there was no hidden key?

What if, what if, what if, what if.

It’s funny – as kids, we used our imaginations to live out our wildest dreams.

We imagined magical lives, adventures, futures that felt limitless.

Our what ifs were exciting.

I remember I used to get lost daydreaming in class.

Imagining a future me I couldn’t wait to become.

Much more interesting than current me learning her times tables.

But somewhere along the way, our what ifs spiraled in the opposite direction.

As adults, we tend to use our imaginations to our detriment.

Playing out the worst case scenarios.

Rehearsing disaster.

And the worst part?

Our bodies are feeling the trauma of it – as though it actually happened.

Even if nothing bad has happened, our nervous systems still respond as if it has.

Because our brains don’t always know the difference between something real and something imagined.

So even though I didn’t actually spend the night locked outside, getting eaten alive by bugs, and freezing to death underneath the grill cover… it felt like I did.

Because I’ve played out that experience over and over in my head.

And for what?

Why do we do this to ourselves?

It’s simple really:

We’re trying to protect ourselves.

We want to make sure we’re fully prepared to handle anything that might come our way.

We won’t be caught off guard if we already rehearsed it.

But in reality, we’re putting ourselves through pain that hasn’t (and might never) happen.

Meanwhile, we’re completely safe in that moment. Nothing bad is even happening.

What if – hear me out – we turned our what if’s on their head?

Instead of imagining what could go wrong…

We envisioned what could go right?

What if the best case scenario unfolded?

The person said yes?

The idea took off?

The opportunity came through?

The risk paid off?

Your imagination is so powerful.

And you get to decide how to use it.

So next time you catch yourself thinking about every horrifying possibility,

Spiraling about all the worst case scenarios,

Close your eyes.

Take a breath.

And ask yourself,

“What if it all works out?”

The truth is, we have no idea what’s going to happen.

There’s no point in living through the ‘worst case’ more than once.

If it happens, you’ll deal with it.

You are strong and capable of handling whatever comes your way.

But until then, consider what could go right.

Use your imagination to your advantage.

You have the power to make all your dreams come true right now. In your head.

Close your eyes and picture the best case scenario.

Choose to believe it’s all working out.

Because it is.

I’m going to be real with you.

I have a really bad habit.

It’s not something I’m proud of – but I know I’m not the only one guilty of this:

Chasing the sweet, sweet high of external validation.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve put the keys to my worth in someone else’s pocket.

When I was single, I thought when I finally got a boyfriend, I’d be good enough.

But then I got a boyfriend… and the target changed.

Then it became – when I hit the right weight, I’d finally be worthy.

Once I achieved that, the target moved again.

When I had THE job, then I’d have value.

But every time I got the “thing”, the finish line moved.

And you know what I finally realized?

It was never going to be enough.

Because if your worth depends on something external, you’ll always be chasing it.

It took a major life change (i.e. rock bottom) for me to finally see the truth.

Thanks to the pandemic-that-shall-not-be-named, I went from the LinkedIn-worthy job and the Instagram-worthy city…

To being unemployed and moving back home with my parents.

Everything I had been placing my worth in was suddenly… gone. Poof. Vanished.

So now what?

Was I suddenly nothing? Nobody? A worthless loser?

I’m not gonna lie – it felt that way for a while.

But here’s what I finally saw clearly:

I was still me.

Still funny, creative, witty, weird, sarcastic, silly, compassionate.

Still the same person I was before – with or without the job title, relationship, or zip code.

So why would I be any less than I was before?

The truth is, I wasn’t.

And that’s when I started to rethink what really made me worthy.

Because I can’t control layoffs, pandemics, likes, followers, or someone else’s approval.

But I can control how I show up.

The way I speak to myself.

The actions I take.

How I play the hand I’m dealt.

If I’m going to place my worth in something, it’s going to be in me.

When I do that, I will never have anything to prove.

Because who I am is inherent – it can never be taken from me.

And I will never have to earn acceptance or chase validation.

Because I already have the power to validate myself.

Now, like I said – I’m going to be real with you.

I’m not perfect at this.

I’m still guilty of outsourcing my worth sometimes.

Like when I post something and it doesn’t get “enough” engagement – my inner critic screams:

You failed. It wasn’t good enough. You’re worthless.

But now I see it for what it is:

An old narrative.

And it gives me the chance to choose differently.

To tell a new story.

To focus on what truly matters.

So instead of spiraling, I tell myself:

I’m proud of you for putting yourself out there.

And how it’s received is none of your business.

And just like that, I take my power back.

Let me tell ya – it feels a lot better than waiting for someone else to hand it to me.

Waiting around? In this economy? Who has the patience??

So let me ask you this:

Where in your life might you be outsourcing your worth and approval?

Next time you notice it, try giving yourself the validation you’re seeking.

I’m proud of you.

I love who you are.

You’re pretty damn awesome.

You’re doing great, sweetie!

Because here’s the secret: you don’t need anyone else’s permission to be enough.

You only need your own.

And here’s the beauty – it’s available to you at any moment.

24/7/365.

Expander Spotlight: Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen is expanding us in a big way right now – not just for his creativity, but for how fully he owns his authenticity.

He started out known as the goofy stoner guy, making irreverent comedies that centered around weed and offbeat humor. That could’ve been his whole brand – but he didn’t stay in that box.
